New energy storage technologies are key to supply more flexibility and balance in the grid, providing a backup to intermittent renewable energy and contributing to seasonal energy storage challenges. The technology is essential to achieve the European Green Deal goals of attaining carbon neutrality by 2050. Yet, the main barrier to the development of energy storage is economic.
To address these challenges, the StoRIES project brings together a consortium of beneficiaries like ESFRI facilities, technology institutes, universities and industrial partners to jointly improve the economic performance of storage technologies. Members of the European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) and the European Association for Storage of Energy (EASE) have a long history of cooperating with each other and are establishing the core of the European ecosystem on energy storage.
